Local SEO without the jargon: a checklist for owners

By XRAYAI  |  20 Apr 2026

You do not need a search engine course. You need a short list of concrete checks that match how a real person looks for a tradesperson, an accountant, or a coffee in their suburb. The same checks now decide whether AI assistants cite you when someone asks for a local recommendation.

The basics that move the needle

Start with your Google Business Profile. Your name, address, phone number, and trading hours should match your website character-for-character. A Carlton bookkeeper listed as "Smith & Co" on Google and "Smith and Co Bookkeeping" on the website confuses both humans and crawlers. Pick one version, use it everywhere. AI assistants are particularly unforgiving here: inconsistent entity data is one of the most common reasons a legitimate business gets passed over in a generative answer.

Make your service areas explicit on a dedicated page. "We serve Bondi, Bronte, Coogee and surrounding eastern suburbs" beats "greater Sydney" when someone is comparing two quotes. Suburb names also give AI assistants something to cite when a buyer asks for a local recommendation.

A few more things worth checking once you have the basics right:

  • Reviews collected at a steady cadence, not a sudden burst that looks paid for.
  • Photos updated quarterly, not the same set from when the site launched.
  • A short FAQ on each service page covering the questions you answer on the phone every week.

When to bring in help

The basics above are well within reach for most owners. The harder layer is what we increasingly call GEO: making sure your business shows up consistently across Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews for the queries your buyers actually use. That work involves schema, entity consistency across dozens of third-party sources, and ongoing competitor monitoring. It is where most owners eventually decide to work with a specialist rather than keep guessing.

None of this is glamorous. All of it compounds. A regional accountant in Bendigo who tightens the basics first, then layers specialist work on top, will usually outperform a competitor who jumped straight to chasing technical tricks.
